Visible Learning is centred around children taking ownership for their learning and “seeing themselves as their own teacher”. The Visible Learning model is based on research conducted by Professor John Hattie to understand the most effectives strategies in planning, teaching and assessing student learning. Visible learners at St Vincent de Paul Primary School are students who can:
- Articulate what they are learning
- Explain the next steps in their learning
- Set learning goals
- See errors as opportunities for further learning
- Know what to do when they are unsure
- Seek feedback
The main components which exist in our daily classroom practice to support students in their learning are:
Learning Intentions: the goal or aim of each individual lesson taught in the classroom
Success Criteria: steps that the students can work towards during a lesson to achieve the learning intention
Learning Goals: personalised and co-constructed goals for students to work towards based on data
Feedback: timely and effective feedback to students about how they are going with their learning and the next steps in their learning.
At St Vincent de Paul, we value and model the lifelong skills that make a successful learner. We have identified six dispositions that a successful learner uses in their everyday life: problem solving, risk taking, organisation, communication, resilience and respect. Our students are guided and supported to apply these skills in the classroom and in their own life
